It has recently been reported that, a woman from Sunderland received poor health, safety and hygiene standards at the hotel she was staying at in Mexico. In particular, the hotel’s food habits were poor which led to the woman contracting food poisoning.

She explained that the food was often under cooked and re-used from previous nights. She booked her two week holiday with Thomas Cook to celebrate her 23rd birthday with her boyfriend. However, as a result of the lack of diligent preparation of the food she endured fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and back pain.

Her illness was so severe she had to receive hospital treatment whilst on holiday, lasting 4 days.  Further, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, another consequence from eating meals at the hotel. The, now 27 year old, woman still suffers gastric symptoms four years on from the incident.

Fortunately, her claim was settled out of court and she was compensated for her injuries and losses by Thomas Cook.

If you become ill as a result of someone else’s negligence whilst on holiday, such as by failing to keep food preparation surfaces clean or undercooking meat, you may be able to make a claim for your injuries and financial losses. It is important that you get independent expert legal advice, preferably as soon as possible.
