The number of road traffic accidents involving cyclists is increasing to alarming levels. The road is a dangerous place for anybody, but cyclists in particular are suffering more and more serious injuries as a result of accidents on the road through no fault of their own.
There are two common causes of injuries to cyclists on the road. The first is being hit by motor vehicles. Recently, a female cyclist was left severely brain damaged after a collison with a bus. The woman, who prior to the accident enjoyed going out on her bike, suffered massive injuries when she collided with the bus at a junction.
She was rushed to hospital and remained there for 5 months. In addition to the brain damage, she had also suffered numerous broken bones. It is unlikely that she will ever walk again and has had her whole life turned upside down.
The second common cause of injury is the road itself. Many roads in the UK are full of potholes. Potholes are a constant threat to cyclists. Recently, a man was thrown from his bike after hitting a pothole and dislocated his right shoulder. He successfully bought a claim against the local council which was responisible for maintaining the road, but he is still having pain and has had to significantly reduce the amount of time he spends on his bike.
